Letter from Highlights

South Street p .0. Box 624 Wenham, Ma. 01984
To the Managing Editor:
I am sending this story to you to be published.
The main idea in my story -well, there really isn't a main climax. After reading many of Beverly Cleary's books, I have tried to use the same technique, which is to write chapters that are like several small stories, with many things happening.
You will meet lots of characters in this book and I hope to make a series out of these same characters. The series would be called the "Mark Steven Wilson Series". This current story is based on Christmas in a small neighborhood.
I am twelve years old, almost thirteen, in the sixth grade at the Middle School in Wenham, Massachusetts. I have been interested in writing for several years. I have always wanted
to write a book abol1t all my friends. The names of all the characters in this book have been changed, with the exception of my own name and members of my family.
Several people have read this book and seem to have enjoyed i t. I believe that this book will be the start for writing many books in the future and I am hoping that you will find it possible to publish it. Whether or not you do, I shall continue to write future books. My goal is to some day become a famous author.
Sincerely yours
Mark Steven Wilson

Dear Mark Wilson :

I’m sorry it’s taking us so long to reach our decision on “Christmas Time Around the Neighborhood.” We are considering your story for our September issue, but final decisions won’t be made until mid-July. Obviously, we like your story a lot, but we still can’t tell you whether or not we will use it in Stone Soup.
Sincerely,
(MS. Gerry Mandel

Dear Mark:
Thank you for waiting so long to hear our decision on 'Christmas Time Around the Neighborhood.’ We think your story is very well written, but after much consideration we have decided not to use it in Stone Soup.
Please don't be discouraged. We receive many more good stories
than we can use, and sometimes difficult choices must be made. "
Keep writing, and send us more of your work if you like.
Yours sincerely,
Gerry Mandel
